五颜六色的英语成（谚）语
    
 英语中，表示颜色的词，如果用在某些成（谚）语中，就不再表示颜色了。请欣赏下列成（谚）语。
1. black sheep：败家子，害群之马，无用之辈
 一群绵羊中有时会有一只长黑毛的羊。引申为不良分子，因为长黑毛的绵羊不及长白毛的绵羊值钱，所以可用来指微不足道的无用之辈。
 He was the black sheep of the family.
 他是个败家子。
2. as black as thunder：脸色阴森，面带怒容
 雷是看不到而听得见的，但打雷时天色阴沉可怕，因此有时再加上cloud，而成as black as thunder cloud。
 “I’m done,” thought Robinson, “there he is as black as thunder.”
 “我完了，”鲁滨逊想，“他脸色如此可怕。”
3. black and blue：青一块，紫一块
 He was beaten black and blue.
 他被打得青一块紫一块的。
4.　two blacks don’t make a white：两黑不等于一白
　　这条谚语是指不能用别人的错误来掩饰自己的错误。相同的谚语还有two wrongs do not make a right。
 Tow black don’t make a white. You can’t palliate your own badness with other’s bad deed.
 两黑不等于一白。你不能用别人的恶行来掩饰自己的劣迹。
5.　sere/ sear and yellow leaf：枯萎黄叶 ―― 老年，暮境
 该引喻来自于秋叶。
 The man expects to live a happy life in the sere and yellow leaf.
 那个人盼望老年过幸福生活。
 He is in the sear and yellow leaf, getting poorer every day.
 他已年老力衰，一天天穷下去。
6.　paint the town red：到夜总会、酒吧等处寻欢作乐
 They heard this morning that they had passed the examination, so they went out to paint the town red.
 今天上午他们得知考试及格，于是都出去狂欢一场。
7.　a red cent：一分钱
 在美国和一些国家都是用铜或黄铜来铸造一分钱硬币，而铜是红色的。一分钱是最低的货币单位，故引申为没有什么价值。
 I did not care a red cent.
 我一点也不在乎。
8.　true blue：赤胆忠心（的），值得信赖的（人），忠心耿耿的（人）
 从字面上看，这条成语是指“不褪色的蓝色染料”，或指永不变色的天蓝色。引喻为人对信仰和原则的坚定不移。这条成语还比喻英国的保守党人对该党的绝对忠实，而且强烈反对他们认为不必要的政治社会改革措施。该成语可作名词或形容词用。
 He’s a true blue of the strictest type.
 他是个绝对忠心耿耿的人。
 -- Don’t worry. I’ll lend you some money.
 -- Oh, will you? Thanks. You’re really true blue.
 -- 不要发愁，我会借给你一点钱。
    -- 好，你借给我钱？谢谢。你真是个值得信赖的。
9.　in the pink：非常健康
 pink原先是个名词，指具备某种优良品质。在这条成语中，比喻人“红光满面，显得健康”。另一条成语the pink of perfection（十全十美）也由此而来。
 -- How am I?
 -- In the pink, my dear chap.
 -- 我的身体怎样？
    -- 非常健康，我的老朋友。
 Madam, she is always the pink of perfection.
 妇人，她是十全十美的。
10.　green with envy：嫉妒得面色发青――非常嫉妒
 早在中世纪的英语中，嫉妒是用皮肤的绿色来表示的。
 She is green with envy because you have moved into a socially better neighborhood.
 她非常嫉妒，因为你已经到社会环境较为高雅的地方去住。
11.　have green fingers：有园艺技能
 有园艺技能的人能凭直觉知道如何处理籽苗和插枝等，经过他培育，植物得以滋长繁茂。
 The old gardener has green fingers.
 这位老园丁有园艺技能。
12.　white elephant：无用而累赘的赠品，沉重的负担
 这个引喻来自国王的习惯做法，当他对某一大臣不满时，就赐给他一头白象，使他因喂养这头白象而花费巨大，进而破产。
 They gave us a number of very large pictures as a wedding present; but as we lived in a very small flat the present was a white elephant.

13.　false colors：隐藏真面目，戴假面具，欺世盗名
 一般指伪君子或冒名顶替的骗子而言。这一成语常同sail 或take连用，即航海用的一句话 sail under false colors（挂着假冒的旗子航行）。海盗往往就采取这种伎俩来迷惑过往船只。
 They are not real merchants. They are political spies sailing under false colors.

14.　stick to one’s colors：坚持立场，坚持己见，恪守信念或原则
 Old ideas change, but I shall stick to my colors and remain a Liberal to the end.

15.　once in a blue moon：极少，极难得，千载难逢
 空气中含有一定量的尘埃时，太阳和月亮有时都会显出深蓝色。地球的某些地方确实每天或每夜都可以看到蓝色的太阳或月亮，只是人们没有这么巧合在适当的地方和适当的时间看到这种现象。
 The schoolmaster said that he was able to go to a play only once in a blue moon.

16.　brown study：沉思，遐想；神不守舍
 For an hour Mr. Arley sat in a brown study, then roused himself and went out.

17.　kill the goose that lays the golden eggs：杀鹅取蛋；竭泽而渔；砍断摇钱树
 源出《伊索寓言》：一个人有只每天生个金蛋的鹅，他想鹅肚子里一定有许多金蛋，于是把鹅宰了，结果一无所获。
 You cannot afford to stop trading with certain countries just because we disagree with their policies – that would be killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.
 我们可不能因为不同意某些国家的政策就停止同他们进行贸易――这就会砍断摇钱树了。
18.　shot in the dark：毫无根据的胡乱猜想
 在黑暗中射击是不可能命中目标。猜想意见事情，如果不了解情况或不是直接了解情况，就像在黑暗中射击一样，是不可能猜中的。
 What he did was like a shot in the dark without result.
 他所干的是瞎猜乱想、不会有结果的事。
19.  show the white feather：畏缩不前，显示胆怯
 这个引喻来自于斗鸡。如果鸡的羽毛出现白色，显示饲养不好。
 The only time he showed the white feather was just before they attacked the enemy.
